my kitchen must-haves
A well-stocked kitchen isn’t about having every gadget under the sun; it’s about having the right essentials that truly make a difference. Here's a rundown of my kitchen must-haves that I use every week in my home.
1. Quality Chef’s Knife
If you invest in just one kitchen tool, make it a high-quality chef’s knife. It’s your go-to for chopping, slicing, mincing, and dicing. Look for an 8-inch stainless steel or carbon steel knife that feels balanced in your hand.
At least two cutting boards—one for produce and bread, another for meat and poultry—help avoid cross-contamination. Wooden boards are great for veggies and dry items, while plastic ones are better for raw meat since they’re easier to sanitize.
Nonstick pans make cleanup a breeze. Just avoid using metal utensils (use wood or silicone ones instead) and replace it when the coating begins to wear off.
4. Dutch Oven
Heavy-duty and versatile, a Dutch oven is perfect for soups, stews, braising meats, baking bread, and even deep-frying.
5. Mixing Bowls
A nesting set of mixing bowls in various sizes is a staple. Use them for prep work, mixing batter, marinating, and more. Stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free plastic are solid choices.
Accurate measurement is key in cooking and baking; stainless steel or glass options are durable and easy to clean.
7. Colander
Tasks such as straining pasta, rinsing fruits and vegetables are much easier with a sturdy colander or fine-mesh sieve.
8. Food Storage Containers
Invest in a set of leak-proof containers for leftovers, meal prepping, or storing pantry items. Glass containers are microwave-safe and stain-resistant, making them a great long-term choice.
A small set of high-quality cooking utensils will go a long way. I like this set from Caraway because it covers most cooking needs without cluttering your drawers.
10. An Instant-Read Thermometer
Take the guesswork out of cooking meats and baked goods. An instant-read thermometer ensures food safety and perfect “done-ness” every time.
A functional kitchen isn’t about how many items you have; it's about having the right tools. Start with these basics, and you’ll be set up for cooking success, whether you’re whipping up a quick weeknight dinner or hosting a weekend event.
